I am Karen Spangler-Berfield, President-CEO of Ascending Angels, Inc. and lifetime Hoosier. I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan in 2000 with my Bachelors in Social Work. Immediately following college, I worked with troubled teens at Triple L Youth Center, in Anderson, IN. In 2001, I started working with the mentally handicapped, through Snug Harbor Home Health, in Middletown, IN. In 2005, I obtained my Masters in Social Work from Indiana University. In September of 2005, I landed my dream job with Insights Consulting, Inc., accepting a behavioral therapy position working with people I had grown to love and admire. While at Insights, I was able to complete my supervision hours and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). After 17 years with Insights, I am still excited to go to work and spend time with these amazing individuals. I am blessed to be married to my best friend and husband, Corey Berfield who is also a board member. Corey is my rock and is a Sergeant with the Indiana State Police. We are also parents to two beautiful children.

Jim MetcalfeIt is an honor and privilege to be a part of Ascending Angels, Inc. My name is Jim Metcalfe. I currently reside in Peru, IN where I was born and raised and am a father daughter, I am a 2002 graduate of Indiana State University and was a member of the men’s basketball team. After graduation, I spent the next 14 years in education. I taught high school and middle school social studies while also coaching boys’ basketball. From 2011 to 2016, I was the head boys’ basketball coach at Rochester and Peru High School. After the 2016 school year, I made the tough decision to make a career change. For the past several years, I have been employed in sales and marketing and currently serve as a territory account manager for Cabinetworks Group, working with KraftMaid and Schuler Cabinetry in Lowes throughout the State of Indiana. Throughout my life, I have always considered myself a “people person” and someone that strives to help others. Ascending Angels, Inc. is a very a special organization run by people very close to my heart, and who I consider family. It’s an opportunity for me to help others “transition with dignity”.

Steve BoyerI’m Steve Boyer and I am honored to serve as a Board Member of Ascending Angels. I’ve known Karen Spangler-Berfield – Founder, President and CEO for several years. Together, with the rest of the Board, we will work to serve a critical need for our state and local communities, dignified interment for people who otherwise have no one else to assist them with their final rest. A native of Indianapolis and a graduate of Ben Davis High School, I have lived in Montgomery County, Indiana for the last 20 plus years. I graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington and Indiana Wesleyan University with degrees in Economics and Business Administration. I’ve spent most of my career in an operations leadership role for large corporations but I made a career transition to Human Services in 2008 and to Home and Community Based Services for people with disabilities in 2012. Since 2014, I’ve worked as a business development specialist and operations director for a premier multi-state provider of residential and therapeutic services to people with disabilities. Throughout the nation, I’ve met and served many people with different abilities and amazing talents.
